Dr Mbagaya graduated from medical school in 1999 and initially worked in general medicine, achieving membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) before training in Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine in Yorkshire Deanery, UK.
He became a consultant in 2014 and is based at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust, where he is a Clinical Director for Laboratory Medicine. He runs busy clinics in metabolic medicine, lipids and diabetes, while advising doctors and patients on the clinical significance of laboratory test results.
A passion for teaching led Dr Mbagaya to obtain a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning of Health professionals at the University of Bristol, where he is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and Year 3 Lead at North Somerset Academy. He continues to teach and mentor junior doctors and colleagues, and frequently speaks on UK-wide GP teaching courses. Dr Mbagaya is also actively involved in a number of cardiometabolic clinical trials as national chief investigator, principal investigator and sub-investigator.
In addition to his NHS practice, Dr Mbagaya sees private outpatients at 25 Harley Street London, Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital and Spire Bristol Hospital as well as offering virtual consultations. His services are covered by major health insurers, and he is listed in the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council.
